Prior to the 1982-83 season, Sheila Beckie took over as head coach of the U of R’s women’s basketball team, which hadn’t made the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. Beckie was the U of R’s fourth coach in as many years, but she brought stability and success and laid the groundwork for what has become one of the strongest women’s basketball programs in the nation.

Beckie’s last season of coaching – 1988-89 – featured her most successful team. The Cougars, who were led offensively by Jackie Moore and Vivian Kingdon, brought home their first conference championship and were the fifth-place finishers at the CIAU tournament in Sudbury, Ont.
