Former Cougar Chelsea Valois named to Canada 1 sled

10/30/2012 5:02:00 PM

Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton announced Tuesday the 2012-13 Canadian National Bobsleigh Team, with former University of Regina track & field athlete Chelsea Valois (pictured) on the Canada 1 sled.

Valois will serve as a brakewoman for experienced pilot Kaillie Humphries, a 2010 Olympic gold medalist and a four-time medallist at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Championship. Valois and Humphries won the two-person women's bobsleigh race at the Canadian bobsleigh and skeleton championships last week in Calgary, finishing with a two-run time of 1:56.53.

“I'm extremely excited for Chelsea to already be achieving success in her new sport,” Cougar track & field head coach Bruce McCannel said. “Chelsea had an enormous amount of success as a Cougar athlete and I feel privileged to have coached her during her CIS career. I know she'll continue to represent the Cougars, the University of Regina, and her hometown of Zenon Park well as one of the top bobsledders in the country.”

Valois wrapped up her five-year CIS track & field career after the 2010-11 season. She was a ten-time Canada West medallist and a two-time CIS medallist, with her top finish coming with a gold medal in the gruelling pentathlon at the 2011 CIS Championships.

The Canadian Bobsleigh Team will start the World Cup tour in Lake Placid, N.Y. from Nov. 5 through Nov. 10. Canada hosts a World Cup stop at the Whistler Sliding Centre from Nov. 19 to Nov. 25.

Also in Calgary are fellow former University of Regina track & field athletes Cassie Hawrysh and Amanda Ruller, who are both training for the skeleton. Hawrysh finished in second place in the women's skeleton at last weekend's national championships.
