Box Score

Andrew Nelson piled up 26 kills, but the University of Regina's men's volleyball team suffered a hard-fought five-set road loss to the Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday night in Canada West action.

The Cougars started out the match with a 25-23 win in the first set, but lost 25-22 and 25-19 in the second and third sets to fall behind 2-1. Regina recorded another 25-23 win in the fourth set to force a fifth and deciding set, but Winnipeg won three out of four points after the set was tied at 12 to win the match.

Four Wesmen broke into double figures in kills, led by Matthew Stubler's 18 and Brendan Black's 15 on just 26 attacks. Ty Loewen chipped in with 12 kills, while Devin Schmidt added 11. Zack Diboll had 52 assists for Winnipeg and added a team-high 11 digs for the double-double.

Nelson's 26 kills are second in the University of Regina record book, trailing only the 29 he posted against Brandon last Saturday. He added a career-high 11 digs for a double-double, while Caleb Eschbach had 56 assists, Andre Borgeaud led all players with 12 digs, and Joel Colter tied for the match high with seven total blocks – five of them solo.

Winnipeg improves to 3-8 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 4-7. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Winnipeg.

NOTES: With nine games remaining on the conference schedule, Nelson needs just 13 kills to break Remington Lenton-Young's University of Regina single-season rookie record of 158 set back in 2005-06 ... Jamie Wilkins had three kills on four attacks in the first set, but rolled his ankle and did not return.
