Athlete Health & Performance Initiative

The Athlete Health and Performance Initiative is a multi-disciplinary approach to providing integrated development, training and testing services, and advising to University of Regina student-athletes. This includes:

• Strength and conditioning training
• Psychological screening assessments
• Concussion baseline testing and ongoing assessment
• Teaching and research related to improving the training and management of athletic programs
• Treatment of athletic injuries, nutrition advising, and rehabilitation services
• Leadership training
• Faculty, AHPI, and Dr. Paul Schwann Centre program development and evaluation

These services are provided by an integrated team of physicians, athletic therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, psychologists, nutritionists, student therapists, strength and conditioning specialists, coaches, faculty members and researchers.

The strength and conditioning program within AHPI is an integrated approach designed to maximize performance and minimize injuries in our student-athletes. All athletes undergo a screening assessment in addition to a performance assessment on an annual or biannual basis to identify areas of concern before they cause injury in the athlete. The results of the screening and performance analyses are then used to develop a training program for the athlete that not only assists them in reaching their performance potential, but also keeps their bodies healthy during a rigorous U SPORTS season. In addition to the screening assessments, performance testing, program design and delivery, varsity athletes also gain access to our $300,000 AHPI strength lab upgrade and newly resurfaced indoor track. The strength lab has been designed with in-ground lifting platforms and outfitted with equipment from Powerlift, Inc.
