Athletic Therapy

Our Athletic Therapists are available to treat University of Regina varsity student-athletes as well as the general population. To book an appointment, please visit here.

A Certified Athletic Therapist is a health professional who specializes in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. The scope of practice of an Athletic Therapist includes the following:

Prevention
• Identification of risks associated with improper biomechanics and correction of technique while performing athletic movements
• Prophylactic taping and bracing 

Emergency Care
• Implementation of an Emergency Action Plan
• Execution of emergency & first-aid techniques as required in injury situations 

Rehabilitation
• Conduct an in-depth assessment by interpreting the mechanism of injury, determining signs, symptoms, and predisposing factors of an injury, illness, or health related condition and performing specific physical or orthopedic testing
• Plan and implement a rehabilitation program utilizing therapeutic modalities (ice/heat, ultrasound, interferential current, massage, etc.) as well as exercise techniques to improve mobility, strength and balance 

Return to Play
• Provide specific guidelines on exercise progressions and apply functional movement techniques to allow a safe, effective return to pre-injury activities.
• Apply taping and bracing techniques as required 
 
The University of Regina currently employs two Athletic Therapists who are responsible for the medical needs of all 13 athletic teams.

The University of Regina Athletic Therapy department provides an opportunity for students in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies to be involved as Student Trainers with their athletic teams. Student Trainers are required to have valid First Aid and CPR Certification and are provided with educational sessions that include taping techniques, concussion identification, and basic assessment skills. Student Trainers are present for all practices and games, including travelling with the team for away games.  If you are interested in becoming a Student Trainer, please fill out this application form.
