Cougars edged 3-1 by Alaska Anchorage

10/6/2012 11:35:00 PM

The University of Regina's men's hockey team lost 3-1 to Alaska Anchorage (NCAA Div. I) on Saturday night in an exhibition game played at the McDonald Center in Eagle River, Alaska.

Tyler Currier, Alex Gellert, and Austin Coldwell all scored for the Seawolves as the home side notched one goal in all three periods, while Matt Strueby replied for the Cougars.

Alaska Anchorage got on the board early when Currier took a pass from Coldwell and took a quick backhand that beat U of R starting goaltender Andrew Hayes to the glove side. That would turn out to be the only goal that Hayes surrendered, as the second-year Cougar made 15 saves before being pulled midway through the second period in favour of Mitch Kilgore.

Gellert gave the Seawolves a 2-0 lead heading into the second intermission after scoring late in the middle frame, knocking in a cross-crease pass from Blake Tatchell to score what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. Coldwell added an insurance marker on a shot from the point seven minutes into the third.

Strueby got the Cougars on the board midway through the final frame, as Matt Sawa's shot from the point was blocked but the third-year forward pounced on the rebound and knocked it home to cut the lead to two.

The Cougars had a couple chances to draw closer, but weren't able to beat Alaska Anchorage goalie Rob Gunderson. Starting goalie Chris Kamal made eight saves for the Seawolves, while Gunderson came in midway through the game and made five saves.

Kilgore made 12 saves in relief for the Cougars.

The U of R will return to the Canada West schedule next weekend with a pair of road games against Lethbridge.

NOTES: The Cougars were 0-for-4 on the power play ... UAA outshot Regina by a 30-14 margin and was 0-for-7 with the man advantage.
