University of Regina Cougars and Rams combined for an impressive total of 91 Academic All-Canadian nominations during the 2019-20 season, a total which stands as the most in a single year by U of R varsity student-athletes.
Academic All-Canadian recognition is earned when a student-athlete registers a grade point average in excess of 80% while using a year of eligibility in their sport.
"I am especially proud of this year's Academic All-Canadians because of the incredible challenges they faced with the pandemic forcing them to complete their winter classes online," said University of Regina Director of Sport, Community Engagement & Athlete Development
Lisa Robertson. "Sport teaches perseverance and adaptability, and this group of young men and women exemplify these qualities. This really is a bright spot for our varsity sport programs in a year of few victories to celebrate. Congratulations to these amazing student athletes!"
Two student-athletes earned the rare distinction of collecting Academic All-Canadian awards in all five seasons.
Jet Davies (women's soccer) and
Tamara McVannel (women's hockey) both accomplished that impressive feat.
Five different teams had over half of their student-athletes earn Academic All-Canadian status, led by women's volleyball which had 10 of its 14 players end up averaging in excess of 80% for the academic year. Women's track & field put 16 of its 27 student-athletes on the list, while six of 11 women's basketball players and 12 of 23 women's hockey players were recognized. The men's and women's swimming teams also combined to put seven of their 14 student-athletes on the Academic All-Canadian list.
In addition to Davies and McVannel locking up their fifth consecutive Academic All-Canadian honours, eight student-athletes locked up their fourth award in four years. That list includes
Michaela Allen (women's track & field),
Darbi Edwards (women's track & field),
Tristan Frei (men's hockey),
Benjamin Hillis (men's basketball),
Kirstin Greve (women's volleyball),
Mason Lanigan (men's track & field),
Lauren Petras (women's soccer), and
Isaac Schacher (men's hockey).
While the Academic All-Canadian program exists at all U SPORTS institutions, the University of Regina is one of only a handful of schools to automatically award scholarships based on Academic All-Canadian status. This fall, the recipients will combine to receive a total of just under $200,000 in tuition credits.
