After splitting their first two games of the Canada West season, the University of Regina Cougars will return to the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre for a pair of home games against the Lethbridge Pronghorns this weekend.
The Cougars were defeated 6-2 by Saskatchewan on Friday in Saskatoon, but recovered in a big way less than 24 hours later. The U of R responded with an 8-1 thumping of the Huskies on Saturday in Regina. The eight goals were the most scored by the Cougars in a game against Saskatchewan since the 1993-94 season, and the seven-goal margin of victory was the highest ever in a U of R win over the Huskies.
Second-year forward
Kyle Ross led the offensive onslaught on Saturday, scoring three goals and adding two assists for a five-point night. Ross, who is now tied for third in league scoring, was named the Canada West Men's Hockey Player of the Week for his efforts.
Dan Bohemier,
Dustin Bru,
Dylan Chapman, and
Caine Pearpoint all chipped in offensively with three-point weekends.
Between the pipes,
Adam Ward took the loss for the Cougars on Friday.
Brant Hilton was given the start on Saturday and turned aside 27 of Saskatchewan's 28 shots to earn his first victory of the season.
Lethbridge comes into town sporting the same 1-1-0 record as the Cougars. The Pronghorns started off their season with a 5-2 win over Manitoba last Friday, but were shut out by a score of 8-0 by the Bisons on Saturday. Dustin Moore scored twice for Lethbridge on Friday, while Tyler Stella netted one goal and added two assists. Goaltender Scott Bowles started both games for the Pronghorns.
Lethbridge and Regina met four times last season, with both teams winning twice. In the last meeting on Feb. 9, the teams combined for a total of 204 penalty minutes in a spirited affair that was won 5-3 by the Cougars.
Since the Cougars joined Canada West prior to the 1985-86 season, the teams have squared off 92 times in the regular season, with Regina holding a 51-34-7 edge in those games. The teams have only met in one playoff series, with Lethbridge taking a 2-1 win in a best-of-three Canada West semifinal series back in 1994.
Both games against the Pronghorns are scheduled to face off at 7 p.m.
After this weekend, the Cougars will finish off their five-game homestand with a pair of games against the Manitoba Bisons on Oct. 17 and 18.
