The University of Regina's men's hockey team was topped 6-0 by the Alaska Nanooks in an exhibition game on Friday at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Cody Kunyk had a pair for the Nanooks, while Nik Yaremchuk, Josh Atkinson, Michael Quinn, and Colton Beck all chipped in with singles in the win. Sean Cahill and John Keeney combined between the Alaska Fairbanks pipes for the shutout.
Lucas Gore and
Mitch Kilgore split the netminding duties for the Cougars, with Gore making 20 saves and Kilgore coming in midway through the second to make 22 saves.
Yaremchuk opened the scoring shorthanded after breaking in on Gore on an odd-man rush six minutes into the first. Gore went for the poke check, but Yaremchuk slid it under the second-year goalie to put the home Nanooks on the board.
That stood as the only goal of the opening 20 minutes, which saw UAF outshoot Regina by a 16-7 margin.
UAF scored twice in less than a minute early in the second period, with Atkinson ripping a one-timer through traffic from the point to make it 2-0 and Quinn scoring just 53 seconds later after a soft, high shot got past Gore after being redirected.
Beck added another shorthanded goal for the Nanooks at 15:36 of the second period, and Kunyk scored on a one-timer with just six seconds left in the middle frame to send Alaska Fairbanks into the second intermission with a 5-0 lead.
Kunyk scored the 6-0 goal after one-timing a rebound off a Quinn point shot that was blocked in front of the net.
UAF was 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Cougars were 0-for-5.
The Cougars will square off with Alaska Anchorage in an exhibition game in Eagle River, Alaska on Saturday night before returning home.
