Cougars finish with 50 points at U SPORTS Swimming Championships

The four University of Regina swimmers at the 2024 U SPORTS Championships over the weekend in Toronto combined to score 50 points at the three-day meet held at the University of Toronto's Athletic Centre Varsity Pool.

Matthew Brough scored all 12 individual points for the Cougars at the meet, most of which came on Thursday when he qualified for the B final in the 50-metre backstroke with a personal-best time of 25.61 seconds in the prelims. He finished eighth in the final to place 16th overall in the event, scoring 11 points with the result. Brough's other point came in 100-metre backstroke on Friday, as he used a personal-best time of 56.16 seconds in the prelims to qualify for the C final.

The team's other 38 points all came in the relays with Brough, Jacob Korpan, Ovesh Purahoo, and Benjamin Stewart all competing in all three events. The squad's top finish was in the 4x100-metre freestyle as the Cougars placed 12th (3:27.41) and scored 15 points.

The Cougars also scored 12 points by placing 15th in the 4x100-metre medley relay (3:51.48) and added 11 points with a 16th-place finish in the 4x200-metre freestyle relay (7:54.17).

NOTES: Brough also had a personal-best time in the 200-metre freestyle prelims (1:51.94) ... Korpan had personal bests in both the 50-metre freestyle (24.38) and the 100-metre butterfly (58.00) ... Brough, Korpan, Purahoo, and Stewart combined to set six relay split personal bests at the meet.
