The defensive back group were game changers in 2024.
They were tied for the conference lead with 11 regular season interceptions and added 6 more in the playoffs. They are looking to keep that momentum going in 2025.
"We will be ready to once again compete in the Canada West at a very high level," said defensive backs coach Ventson Donelson.
The defensive back room certainly has some holes to fill, with both Jackson Sombach and Dolani Robinson moving on to the CFL.
Sombach played 37 games in his five years with the program, finishing with 136 total tackles, 24 pass breakups, 4 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries. He was named a Canada West All-Star in 2022 and 2024 and was selected by the Calgary Stampeders with the 60th overall pick in the 2024 CFL draft.
Robinson played two seasons for the Rams at boundary corner and was named a Canada West All-Star in 2024. He signed with the Stampeders in July 2025.
"We are young but very talented," said Donelson. "We are looking forward to seeing all of the players contribute in a positive way."
The group may be young overall, but there are several veterans returning.
Carson Sombach returns fresh off an East-West Bowl selection and will once again start at safety. He had career highs across the board in 2024, finishing with 39 tackles, 3 pass breakups, and 2 interceptions, including a 46-yard interception return in the Hardy Cup that would go on to be the game winning score.
Jacob Tkachuk also returns after a breakout season in which he had 35 tackles, 8 pass breakups, and 3 interceptions, including a 71-yard interception return TD on the opening play vs Calgary in Week 6, which is the fourth longest in Rams' history.
Jaxon Fuchs, Ethan Jaster, and Max Polischuk all return and are expected to contribute. Heading into his fifth-year of eligibility, Fuchs brings experience with 23 total games played, while Jaster has recorded 43 tackles over 19 games played.
Polischuk joined the Rams in 2023 after spending the 2022 season with South Dakota State University. He has recorded 31 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 4 pass breakups in 12 career games.
Other returners include Chase Murray, Tyleon Ocaya, Rylar Sombach, Connor Sombach, Cedric McCallum, and Jonah Thomas.
There are also five new high school recruits that join the group.
Liam Platt is expected to contribute early out of Miller Comprehensive in Regina.
Platt was highly-recruited and was named Defensive MVP of the U18 Football Canada Cup in 2023.
He is joined by his Miller teammate Holden Strinja, as well as Jaik Reich from Michael A. Riffel, and Gavin Packham from Winston Knoll Collegiate, both of whom played for Team Saskatchewan at the Football Canada Cup in 2024.
Finally, Ismael Mohamed joins the team from Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in Lethbridge, Alberta.
