Al Murray coached the Cougars during the 1985-86, 1986-87, and 1987-88 seasons, the program's first three years as a Canada West member.

After Murray's stint with the Cougars, he spent 19 years with the Los Angeles Kings, first as a scouting coordinator and then as the team's director of amateur scouting. He then spent three seasons with Hockey Canada, then joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as that team's director of amateur scouting before also taking on the role of assistant general manager prior to the 2019-20 season.
