Sadie Anderson hits U SPORTS standard at Edmonton Open

First-year swimmer hits PB in 50 fly to book trip to nationals

  • Sadie Anderson provided the highlight for the University of Regina's swimming teams over the weekend at the Edmonton Open, a long-course meet hosted by the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club at the Kinsmen Sports Centre in Edmonton.

ANDERSON MEETS STANDARD
  • Anderson finished fourth in the 50-metre butterfly prelims on Sunday with a time of 29.53 seconds before going nearly a half second faster in the final. She was also fourth in the final with a personal-best time of 28.94 seconds, bettering the national standard of 28.96 seconds and booking her trip to the U SPORTS Championships to be hosted by McMaster University in Markham, Ont. in March.
  • Anderson also had a big PB in the 100-metre freestyle on Saturday (1:01.68) where she chopped well over a second off her previous best, which was set at this same meet two seasons ago.

MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Isaac Currie set a school record, registered a first-place finish and a pair of second-place efforts, and had new personal-best times in all four of his events. His time of 30.77 seconds in the 50-metre breaststroke broke Besjon Rexha's previous U of R mark of 30.88, and Currie also set new PBs in the 100 free (54.84 s), 100 breast (1:06.94), and the 200 IM which he won in a time of 2:10.29.
  • Matthew Brough had the only other first-place finish for the Cougars, taking top spot in the 100 free with a time of 52.97 seconds.
  • Ethan Elliott secured a personal-best time in the prelims of the 100 free (53.34 s) before going on to finish second in the finals.
  • Mason Hickman had a pair of PBs including in the final of the 100-metre freestyle, where he placed fifth with a time of 54.79 seconds.
  • The men's team combined for 19 personal-best times at the three-day meet. Dylan DeRose led the way with five, Currie had four, Adalbert Zhang and Elliott both had three, and Declan Bennett and Hickman had two.

WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Chloe Hegi tied Anderson for the women's team's highest finish, placing fourth in the 50-metre freestyle in a time of 27.43 seconds which matches her PB in the event.
  • Mekayla Erpelo's three PBs were highlighted by the 100-metre backstroke (1:09.26) and the 200 IM (2:33.18).
  • Kelsey Jones and Kally Kennedy also had PBs, giving the women's team a total of seven for the meet.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars have a pair of time trials in Regina upcoming, one on Feb. 25 and another on Mar. 2. Anderson, Brough, and Ovesh Purahoo have all qualified for the U SPORTS meet, which will be held from Mar. 12 through Mar. 14.
