The University of Regina's Chloe Hegi hit the U SPORTS standard in the 50-metre freestyle on Monday night at a time trial at the Lawson Aquatic Centre in Regina.

Hegi put down a personal-best short-course time of 26.29 seconds in the 50 free, breaking her previous fastest of 26.51 seconds set earlier this season at the Canada West meet. Her time beats the national standard of 26.35 seconds, booking her a trip to Markham, Ont. in mid-March for the U SPORTS Championships.

"Chloe has had a huge first year with us," Cougars head coach Baylee Munro said. "She scored points in multiple events at Canada West and she's going to be one to watch for the next four years."

Ethan Elliott, Kally Kennedy, and Adalbert Zhang also registered personal-best times at the time trial. Elliott had a PB in the 50 free (23.13), Kennedy in the 50-metre butterfly (28.84), and Zhang in the 50 free (25.34).

Hegi is expected to compete in the 50-metre, 100-metre, and 200-metre freestyles at the U SPORTS meet along with the 200-metre individual medley. U of R swimmers Sadie Anderson, Matthew Brough, and Ovesh Purahoo have also qualified for the national meet.

The Cougars have a time trial scheduled for next Monday at the Lawson, which will be their final official competition before their season concludes in mid-March.
