Podbielski, Teichler pace Cougars at Stewart Cup

Podbielski third, Teichler 11th at Calgary meet

Jonathan Podbielski's third-place finish highlighted the University of Regina Cougars' performance at the Stewart Cup cross country meet held on Saturday at West Confederation Park in Calgary.

COUGAR HIGHLIGHTS
  • Podbielski placed third overall behind University of Alberta runner and former Cougar Ron MacLean, who won the event, and second-place finisher Yemane Mulugeta of Trinity Western. Podbielski finished with a time of 23:30 on the course, which consisted of four 2K loops over rolling grass.
  • Ian Teichler continued his strong rookie season by finishing just outside of the top 10 finishers. He finished with a time of 24:14, just beating a Victoria runner to the line to end up in 11th place out of 88 finishers. Brett MacLean also had a solid performance, placing 36th with a time of 25:10.
  • The Cougars brought two runners on the women's side. Harper Lebell placed 50th with an 8K time of 31:27, while Vera Gauvin was 55th with a finishing time of 35:11.
  • The U of R's top five was rounded out by Morgan Kilgour in 63rd place (26:06) and Henry Sharp in 73rd place (26:42) as the Cougars finished in seventh place in the team standings.
  • Mason Muchowski (78th), Eric Dorey (80th), Kaelen Kolb (82nd), and Daniel Eiswerth (84th) also finished for the Cougars with times of 26:54, 27:08, 27:13, and 27:19, respectively.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will have next weekend away from competition before running at the Canada West Championships in Camrose, Alta. on Oct. 26. The U SPORTS Championships are scheduled for Nov. 9 in Kelowna, B.C.
