“I do a little bit of everything”: Rams RB Fettes on competing as both a U SPORTS heptathlete and football player

9/23/2025 5:00:00 PM

Quinton Fettes is not your typical dual-sport athlete.

When the 3rd-year running back isn't playing football for the Rams, he competes in the heptathlon for the University of Regina track & field team.

The heptathlon consists of 7 events: the 60-metre, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60-metre hurdles, pole vault, and the 1000-metre.

"I do a little bit of everything," said Fettes. "I have to train lots of different aspects of my body."

He does a little bit of everything on the football field too.

Along with his running back duties, he spends time long-snapping, returning kicks, and playing on a variety of special teams.

He has emerged as the Rams' primary kick-returner and currently leads the Canada West and is second in U SPORTS in average return distance at 29.8 yards per return.

Fettes was originally only offered a spot on the track & field team, but after impressing the coaching staff at Rams camp in 2023, he was offered a spot on the football roster as well.

"I believe that what I do in both of my sports helps with the other," said Fettes. "The variety of training I do in track helps with speed development and injury prevention, as my body is used to putting full force into movements."

He also notes that change of direction required in football helps strengthen his joints for when track season comes around.

However, the busy schedule puts stress on more than just his body.

"I would say the toughest part is staying on top of my classes," said Fettes.

While the rest of the Rams get to shift their focus to school for the second semester, Fettes immediately begins the track & field season, meaning he never has a semester of school in which he is not also competing in some capacity.

"I am training almost every evening and competing almost every weekend," said Fettes. "Most of my time outside of school is occupied by sports."

While this may seem overwhelming, Fettes credits his coaches for making his busy schedule as manageable as possible.

"All of my coaches understand that I am trying to be fully committed to two teams, so they are very helpful in making sure I can perform to the best of my ability in both sports," said Fettes.

Fettes and the 3-1 Rams take on the 2-2 Manitoba Bisons at Mosaic Stadium at 2:00 PM, Saturday, Sep. 27th.
