Game Recap: Rams Football |

Ground game shines again as Rams take out Bisons

Erichsen scores three times, runs for 165 yards in win

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina started slowly, but Marshall Erichsen scored three touchdowns and ran for 165 yards to help the No. 6-ranked Rams surge to a 30-8 win over Manitoba on Saturday afternoon at Mosaic Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Simply put, the first quarter was all Manitoba. After the opening 15 minutes the Bisons held a 117-17 advantage in yards, a 6-0 edge in first downs, and most importantly a 7-0 lead thanks to a 10-yard pass from Cole Anseeuw to De Shawn Le Jour.
  • The tide started to turn in Regina's favour in the second quarter. The U of R offence got its first five first downs of the game on a 10-play, 98-yard drive which was finished by a 28-yard rush by Marshall Erichsen for a major. Two possessions later, Noah Pelletier hit Nicholas Sirleaf for a 52-yard gain to get well into Manitoba territory. The drive appeared to stall with the Rams facing 3rd-and-4, but Regina was able to successfully draw Manitoba into an offside penalty and Pelletier connected with Erichsen on the very next play for a 14-yard touchdown which put the Rams up 14-7 at the half.
  • Manitoba's Maya Turner opened up the second half with an 85-yard rouge on the kickoff, but that turned out to be the Bisons' final point of the night. The Rams' defence forced three second-half turnovers, one on a Carson Sombach interception and the next two on Manitoba fumbles on back-to-back possessions in the fourth.
  • Rookie kicker Ty Gorniak booted three field goals in the second half to extend Regina's lead to 23-8, and the Rams halted any hope of a Manitoba comeback with a late touchdown drive that started with a 45-yard rush by Erichsen. Erichsen finished it off himself with a two-yard run, scoring his third touchdown of the game and sealing the win for the Rams.

QUOTABLE
  • "It was a hard-fought win for us. We had a slow start and relied on our defence, but then got going as a team after the first. This win shows what we're all about — a team that doesn't flinch when adversity hits. Our defence did a great job all game stopping the run and creating turnovers." - Rams head coach Mark McConkey

ALL ABOUT ERICHSEN
  • Erichsen's 165 rushing yards came off just 18 carries as the third-year running back averaged a healthy 9.2 yards per run.
  • Through just five games, Erichsen now has 725 rushing yards and 8 touchdown runs. He's still on pace to threaten Adrian Charles' school record of 972 rushing yards (2010) and to become the U of R's first 1000-yard rusher, and is also just a single touchdown run away from tying the school record of 9 currently held by Charles (2010) and Neal Hughes (2003).
  • Erichsen's rushing numbers were in large part due to the path cleared by the offensive line consisting of Nate Boyd, Nick Makowsky, Riley Schick, Will Templeton, and Nnadozie Marendiukobianwa

SIRLEAF HITS TRIPLE DIGITS... AGAIN
  • Nicholas Sirleaf led all receivers with 6 catches for a total of 111 yards, marking the third time in five games this year that the second-year wide receiver has hit triple digits.
  • Sirleaf is second in Canada West and fifth in the nation with an average of 107.2 receiving yards per game. With 536 receiving yards already this season, Sirleaf is on pace to collect over 800 — a mark which has only been hit by five different U of R receivers, and not since Mitchell Picton in 2016.

DEFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Tkachuk and Wong had the fourth-quarter fumble recoveries, first by Tkachuk as he forced the fumble himself which he pounced on. Wong's recovery came on a bizarre play which saw Jacob Dakiniewich strip the ball before it rocketed off the foot of Toryn Swystun-Bernes right to Wong.
  • Sombach and Liam Platt both had interceptions for the Rams, while Liam LaBelle and Max Polischuk were credited with pass breakups.
  • Owen Zimmer led the Rams in tackles (4 solo, 4 assisted).
  • Dakiniewich and Kaeden Brennan both had tackles for loss.

UNDER CENTRE
  • Noah Pelletier got the start and completed 13 of 24 passes for 165 yards including the touchdown to Erichsen.
  • Owen Sieben took over at quarterback late in the third quarter and played the rest of the contest, going 7-for-10 for a total of 105 yards including a 30-yard completion on what was Kaleb Senz's first Canada West reception.

NEXT UP
  • The Rams (4-1) will be back at home next Saturday against Calgary at Mosaic Stadium.
  • A win for the U of R over the Dinos would lock up a Canada West playoff berth heading into the Thanksgiving bye week.
