The University of Regina's men's hockey team continued its solid start on Friday night with a 3-2 shootout win over the visiting Manitoba Bisons in a Canada West game at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

The Cougars (3-1-1), who haven't suffered a regulation loss since the first game of the season, are now in sole possession of second place in the conference.

Kyle Ross scored the only goal of the shootout and Adam Ward stopped all three Manitoba attempts to secure the victory.

“It wasn't the prettiest win we've ever had, but it was a win,” Cougars head coach Blaine Sautner said. “They came out hard with great speed, but in the third period we started battling a lot harder and were a lot stronger on the puck. Hopefully we can carry that momentum into tomorrow's game.”

Regina's Blair Stengler opened up the scoring five minutes into the game, tipping home a centering feed to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The lead was extended to two midway through the second period when Ross scored his fourth goal of the season following a goalmouth scramble.

Calin Wild got the Bisons (2-3-2) on the board after scoring a shorthanded goal on a breakaway late in the second. Manitoba tied up the game on a goal from Kyle Howarth six minutes into the third.

Ward (2-1) earned the win and stopped 18 of Manitoba's 20 shots. Steve Christie made 22 saves between the pipes for the Bisons.

Neither team was able to score with the power play. Manitoba was 0-for-5 with the man advantage, while Regina was 0-for-6.

The two teams will face off again on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
