Bisons erupt for five third-period goals; take 7-1 win over Regina

The University of Manitoba Bisons led by only two goals after the first two periods, but erupted for five goals in the final frame to take a 7-1 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night in a Canada West men's hockey game at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Cole Hunter opened the scoring for the Bisons with a power play goal four minutes into the first period, and the score stayed 1-0 until Rick Wood's fifth goal of the season gave Manitoba a 2-0 lead.

Goals by Kyle Howarth and Nick Hotson in the first five minutes of the third period increased Manitoba's lead to four, and Jon Cara made the score 5-0 with eight minutes remaining in the period. Mike Hellyer scored two goals in the span of 40 seconds to extend the lead to seven.

The Cougars were finally able to get on the board with 19 seconds left in the game, when Matt Sawa scored the first goal of his CIS career.

Steve Christie stopped 28 of Regina's 29 shots to record the win. Starting his second consecutive game for the Cougars, Adam Ward made 28 saves and took the loss.

The Cougars will now prepare for a pair of road games at Calgary next weekend. The teams will play on Friday and Saturday at the Father David Bauer Arena. Manitoba will travel to UBC for a pair of road games next weekend.
