Box Score Game Summary

Two first-period goals by Kara McGeough weren't enough as the University of Alberta's women's hockey team pulled away from the Regina Cougars in the third period to record a 7-3 victory on Saturday night at the Clare Drake Arena.

After Alberta jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, McGeough scored two goals in a span of 2:56 midway through the first period to knot the game at two. Miranda Miller scored the first of her three goals two minutes later to put the Pandas up 3-2, and the score stayed that way until early in the third period.

Alana Cabana put the Pandas up 4-2 just over a minute into the third, but Kelcie McCutcheon scored her first goal of the season just 31 seconds later to cut the lead back down to one.

That, however, was as close as the Cougars would come.

Miller scored twice on the power play to put the Pandas up 6-3 just past the eight-minute mark of the third period, and Lindsie Fairfield's shorthanded goal with three minutes remaining finished off the scoring.

Melanie Rees got the start for Alberta and made 18 saves in the win. Lisa Urban got the call for Regina and stopped 25 of the Pandas' 32 shots.

McCutcheon assisted on both of McGeough's goals, giving the third-year forward a three-point night.

After five consecutive games on the road, the Cougars (0-6-0) will finally return to the friendly confines of the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre next weekend as the U of R hosts Lethbridge (0-5-1) on both Friday and Saturday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on both nights.
