The University of Regina's women's hockey team opened up its 2008-09 Canada West schedule on Friday night with a 6-1 loss to the visiting Saskatchewan Huskies at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
The Huskies (1-0-0) jumped out to an early lead, getting even strength goals from Nicole Peppler, Danny Stone, and Shaye Christiansen to take a 3-0 advantage midway through the first period.
Regina (0-1-0) replied midway through the second stanza, cutting the lead to 3-1 when
Kelsie Graham scored an unassisted goal after a goalmouth scrum. Graham's shot hit the back post in the net and came right back out, but the referee immediately signalled a goal.
Saskatchewan restored their three-goal lead with just 12 seconds left in the second when Kelsey Fenton scored a power play goal on a wrist shot from the left point. The score remained 4-1 until the Huskies added two power play goals in the final two minutes of the game.
Saskatchewan's Vanessa Frederick stopped 17 of Regina's 18 shots to record the win.
Lisa Urban recorded 31 saves for the Cougars and was charged with the loss.
Both teams were assessed six minor penalties. Saskatchewan was 3-for-6 on the power play, while Regina was 0-for-6 with the man advantage.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday night in Saskatoon at the Rutherford Rink on the U of S campus. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
