Cougars open Canada West schedule with 68-52 win over Winnipeg

Jessica Lynch scored 20 points and added eight rebounds to lead the No. 8-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team to a 68-52 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Lynch went 7-for-16 from the field and hit six of her seven free throw attempts during the game. Stacey Walker and Rebecca Schmidt (pictured) also scored 13 points for the Cougars, while Chelsea Cassano scored 10 points and grabbed five boards in just 16 minutes on the floor.

The teams were tied 14-14 after the first quarter, but the Cougars tightened up defensively in the second quarter, allowing just two points and scoring 13 of their own to take a 27-16 lead into halftime. The Wesmen chipped the lead down to eight points early in the fourth, but could draw no closer. Regina scored nine consecutive points late in the final quarter to put Winnipeg away down the stretch.

Jessica Stromberg scored 14 points and had eight rebounds for Winnipeg while recording a game-high 38 minutes played. Amy Ogidan had 12 points, but shot just 4-for-19 from the field. Alexandria MacIver led all players with five offensive rebounds and grabbed a total of eight for the game.

Friday's game was the first of the conference schedule for the Cougars, giving them a 1-0 record to start the season. Winnipeg, which entered the game ranked No. 6 in the CIS, drops to 2-1 with the loss.

The two teams will play again on Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. at the CKHS.

NOTES: Including regular season and playoff games, the Cougars have now won seven consecutive games over Winnipeg … Mallory Loire made her first appearance for Regina since the 2006-07 season, as she missed all of last year while recovering from knee surgery … Walker also had a game-high five assists for Regina.
