Lethbridge earns weekend split with 4-1 win over Regina

Mackenzie Rizos made 25 saves to backstop the Lethbridge Pronghorns to a 4-1 win on Saturday night over the Regina Cougars in Canada West women's hockey action at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Rizos allowed just one goal and Breanne Melnychuk scored a goal and added two assists to lift the Pronghorns to victory.

Kate Nesbitt opened the scoring for Lethbridge on the power play at the 14:35 mark of the first period. The score stayed that way until three minutes into the second, when Regina's Kelsie Graham tied the game at one.

The Pronghorns regained the lead at the 12-minute mark of the middle session when Melnychuk popped her first goal of the season. Lethbridge goals by Lindsay Murray and Shelby Ballendine 47 seconds apart in the waning moments of the second period gave the Pronghorns a 4-1 lead that they held on to for the final 20 minutes of the contest.

Lisa Urban made 24 saves in the loss for Regina.

The win, Lethbridge's first of the season, improves the Pronghorns' record to 1-6-1. The loss drops the Cougars' record to 1-7-0.

Lethbridge will host Saskatchewan (4-3-1) in a pair of games next weekend, while the Cougars have the weekend off before heading to UBC (4-3-1) for two road games on Nov. 14 and 15.
