Box Score Game Summary
Two goals in the first five minutes gave the University of Regina's men's hockey team all the offence it needed, as
Brant Hilton stopped all 27 shots he faced and the Cougars registered a 2-0 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds in a Canada West game on Friday night at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
The Cougars scored just 56 seconds into the game, as
Laurent Benjamin's unassisted goal gave the U of R an early lead. Regina extended that lead at the five-minute mark of the first period when
Kyle Ross scored his sixth goal of the season on the power play with assists from
Ryan Cruse and Benjamin.
Hilton's 27 saves – including one on a Darrell May penalty shot late in the second period – gave the second-year goalie his first shutout of the season and the third of his CIS career. Hilton now boasts a 1.96 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage for the season.
Francois Thuot stopped 17 of 19 shots for UBC, but was tagged with his fourth loss of the season.
UBC outshot Regina by a 27-19 margin during the contest. The Cougars were 1-for-5 with the man advantage, while the Thunderbirds were held scoreless during their seven power play opportunities.
The win improves Regina's record to 4-5-2 on the season. With 10 points, the Cougars are tied for fourth place in the conference with Calgary (5-6-0) and Lethbridge (5-6-0). UBC drops to 4-7-0 with the loss.
The two teams will play again on Saturday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
