Box Score Game Summary
Caine Pearpoint scored the lone regulation goal for the University of Regina, then added the deciding goal in a six-round shootout to help the Cougars record a 2-1 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday night at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
Pearpoint's third goal of the season gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. The U of R held onto the lead until just under 15 minutes through the second, when Jordan Inglis knotted the score at one with an assist from Ryan Kakoske.
The score remained 1-1 through the third period and overtime, sending the game into a shootout.
Brennan Sonne opened up the shootout with a goal, but that was the only shot to beat Cougar goalie
Brant Hilton in the deciding session.
Dylan Chapman scored in the third round to extend the shootout, and Pearpoint finally beat Gerry Festa in the sixth round to secure the victory.
Hilton made 27 saves during regulation and stopped five of the six UBC players in the shootout. Festa also made 27 saves for the Thunderbirds.
The win gives the Cougars a 5-5-2 record for the season. With 12 points, the Cougars are tied for fourth place in Canada West with Lethbridge (6-6-0).
UBC drops to 4-7-1 with the loss and will host Calgary (5-7-0) next weekend.
The Cougars will host No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan (9-4-1) next weekend at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
