The University of Regina's women's basketball team played a solid 40 minutes on Saturday night in an impressive 76-55 win over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars played for the entire game just as they had played in the second half of Friday nights' come-from-behind victory over the Victoria Vikes. The Cougars shot 44% from the field and were 9-for-14 from beyond the arc for the game and played strong defence throughout, limiting the Thunderbirds to just 22 first-half points.

Four Cougars broke into double digits in points, including Rebecca Schmidt (16), Brittany Read (11), Chelsea Cassano (10), and Gabrielle Gheyssen (10). Jacquie Kenyon pulled down a game-high ten rebounds for the Cougars.

UBC was led by Alex Vieweg, who scored 15 points and sank all six of her free throws in 28 minutes on the floor. Leanne Evans had eight rebounds for the Thunderbirds but was held to just two points scored, well below her season average.

The Cougars jumped out to an 18-10 lead after the first quarter and took a 15-point lead into halftime after outscoring UBC by a 19-12 margin in the second. Regina continued to build on its lead in the second half and led by as many as 25 points in the waning moments of the fourth quarter.

The Cougars, who were ranked No. 4 in the CIS entering the weekend and will likely climb even higher considering Winnipeg's loss to Manitoba on Thursday, now boast an impressive 5-1 record for the season. UBC drops to 3-5 with the loss.

UBC will return back to the Lower Mainland for a home-and-home series against No. 1-ranked Simon Fraser next weekend. The Cougars will also be playing in British Columbia, as they'll square off with both Thompson Rivers and Fraser Valley in the first and second of eight consecutive games on the road.
