The No. 2-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team needed an extra five minutes, but finally put away the Brandon Bobcats by a score of 81-74 on Friday night in a Canada West game at Brandon.
Brandon's Melanie Thompson hit a turnaround jumper at the buzzer to force overtime, but the Cougars scored the first 10 points of the extra session to pull away from the pesky Bobcats.
Jessica Lynch was all over the glass for the Cougars. The fifth-year forward had 17 points, 19 rebounds, and six assists in 38 minutes on the floor.
Chelsea Cassano came off the bench to lead the Cougars with 20 points, while
Rebecca Schmidt (14) and
Carmen Stewart (11) also broke into double figures in points.
Thompson ended up with a game-high 21 points for the Bobcats and added six assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Jayla Bousquet had 19 points, six rebounds, and four steals, while Christie McCullough had 10 points, seven assists, and five steals.
The Cougars improve to 8-1 with the win, while Brandon drops to 1-8. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Brandon.
NOTES: Lynch's 19 rebounds is the most by a U of R player since the Cougars joined Canada West prior to the 2001-02 season.
