Box Score Game Summary
After a tight-checking first two periods, the Regina Cougars and the Manitoba Bisons suddenly erupted for five goals in the third as Manitoba took a close 3-2 decision in a Canada West women's hockey game at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre on Friday night.
The Cougars and the Bisons combined for just 22 shots in the first two periods, with Manitoba's Stacey Corfield and Regina's
Lisa Urban both stopping everything sent their way.
The two teams then kicked the offence into high gear, combining for five goals in less than four minutes midway through the third.
Manitoba got on the scoreboard first after Nellie Minshull potted her fifth goal of the season. The Bisons went ahead 2-0 on a goal by Chantal DeSpiegelaere, then extended that lead to three with a goal by Amanda Schnell.
Just 24 seconds after Schnell's marker, Regina's
Brooke Einarson got the Cougars on the board with a power play goal with assists from
Kelsie Graham and
Kara McGeough.
Rianne Wight then scored 34 seconds after Einarson, netting her second goal of the season with helpers from
Stefanie Banilevic and
Gina Campbell.
Neither team was able to dent the twine after Wight's goal and Manitoba was able to hang on for the victory.
Corfield stopped 12 of the Cougars' 14 shots to record the win for the Bisons. Urban made 22 saves for the Cougars but was tagged with the loss.
The Cougars were 1-for-5 on the power play, while Manitoba was 0-for-6.
The win improves Manitoba's record to an unblemished 13-0-0 on the season, while the Cougars drop to 3-10-0.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Regina. Following this weekend, both teams will take a break from the Canada West schedule until Jan. 9.
