Cougars to battle for playoff lives this weekend against UBC

1/22/2009 5:52:55 PM

The University of Regina's women's hockey team is six points out of a playoff spot with just six games remaining in the regular season, but there's no better team to be hosting this weekend than the UBC Thunderbirds, who are in town for Friday and Saturday night games at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Both Saskatchewan and UBC enter the weekend tied for third place in the conference with 15 points, but the Huskies have two games in hand on the Thunderbirds. Two regulation wins for the Cougars this weekend would not only put them just two points back of UBC for the final playoff spot, but also ensure that they would hold the tiebreaker at the end of the season in the event that the two teams ended up with the same amount of points.

The teams have already met twice this season, splitting a weekend series in Vancouver in mid-November. UBC won 2-0 back on Nov. 14, but the Cougars replied with a 2-0 victory one day later.

The Cougars are coming off of a three-point weekend in Lethbridge, where they lost 2-1 in overtime to the Pronghorns on Friday before recovering for a 4-2 win on Saturday to improve to 4-13-1 on the season. Fifth-year forward Kara McGeough continues to lead the team in scoring, as she has registered six goals and 11 assists for 17 points in 18 games so far this season. Fourth-year forward Kelsie Graham is tied with McGeough for the team lead with six goals and also has seven assists for 13 points. Fifth-year defenceman Brooke Einarson leads all Cougar blueliners with seven points.

UBC (7-10-1) is coming off of two 8-0 losses to the powerhouse Alberta Pandas. The Thunderbirds were outshot 58-6 during Friday's game and 44-5 on Saturday. Alisha Choy leads UBC with four goals on the season, while Kim Coates and Jenny Mahovlich are tied for the team lead with nine points.

Both Friday and Saturday night's games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Following this weekend, the Cougars will finish off their regular season with a home-and-home series against Saskatchewan and two home games against Alberta.
