Read's 20, Lynch's defence lifts Cougars to win

Spurred by Brittany Read's career-high 20 points and tough defence shown by Jessica Lynch, the University of Regina's women's basketball team scored a 71-62 road win over the Winnipeg Wesmen to inch closer to the Great Plains Division regular season title.

Read scored 12 of her 20 points from the free throw line, where she was a perfect 12-for-12 on the night. Lynch held Winnipeg's Amy Ogidan – who ranks among the conference's top scorers – to just three points on the night, as Ogidan was 0-for-11 from the field.

Lynch also had nine points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Cougars. Gabrielle Gheyssen had 16 points, while Chelsea Cassano had 11.

Jessica Stromberg led Winnipeg with 15 points.

The win improves Regina's record to 13-4 on the season. The Cougars can clinch the division title on Saturday night with another win over the Wesmen.

NOTES: Cassano became the ninth player in U of R history to record at least 1000 points in her career ... with 11 points, Cassano now has 1007 with the Cougars.
