Box Score Game Summary
The University of Regina's women's hockey team is now just two points behind UBC for fourth place in Canada West after completing a weekend sweep over the Thunderbirds with a 4-2 win on Saturday night at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
The Cougars' rookie line of
Gina Campbell,
Paige Wheeler, and
Rianne Wight accounted for three of the U of R's four goals during the night, with
Kelcie McCutcheon scoring the other.
Lisa Urban made 27 saves for the Cougars in the win.
Kristie Keller and Kaylee Chanakos replied for UBC. Melinda Choy stopped 27 of 30 shots for the Thunderbirds.
Campbell opened the scoring just under nine minutes into the first period, firing a wrist shot that Choy got a blocker on, but the puck squeezed through and got behind the UBC goalie for Campbell's fourth goal of the season. The score stayed 1-0 until early in the second period, when Keller scored a power play goal to tie the game at one.
The Cougars, however, had an answer. Wight scored a power play goal just 50 seconds later to put the U of R in the lead for good. McCutcheon scored another goal on the power play midway through the second, giving the Cougars a two-goal advantage.
Chanakos scored with two and a half minutes left in the second period to cut the Cougar lead to one, but that was as close as the Thunderbirds would come. Wheeler's empty net goal with 41 seconds left iced the game for the Cougars, who improve to 6-13-1 with the win.
UBC was 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Cougars were 2-for-5. Regina outshot the Thunderbirds by a 31-29 margin during the game.
Both teams will have next weekend off. The Cougars will be back in action on Feb. 7 and 8 with a home-and-home series against Alberta, while UBC will be charged with the task of taking on the undefeated Manitoba Bisons.
