Box Score Game Summary
Tanner Shultz scored the first two goals of his CIS career to lift the University of Regina's men's hockey team to a 6-2 victory over the Calgary Dinos on Sunday afternoon in a Canada West game at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
Shultz,
Dustin Bru, and
Ryan Sawka all had three points to lead Regina's offence, while goalie
Adam Ward played well for the second game in a row and made 29 saves to secure the win for the Cougars. Shultz was the lone multiple goal scorer for Regina, notching the first two goals of his CIS career.
Brock Nixon scored both goals for the Dinos, who drop to 6-13-1 with the loss.
Regina's weekend sweep over Calgary improves the Cougars' record to 8-12-2 on the season. With 18 points, the fifth-place Cougars are four points up on UBC and five points up on Calgary, though both teams have two games in hand on Regina.
“Tanner (Shultz) has the tools to do it and he broke out today,” Cougars head coach
Blaine Sautner said. “
Ryan Sawka was flying around and making things happen as well, and we were tight defensively and had good goaltending again.”
Dillon Johnstone opened up the scoring for the Cougars with his fourth power play goal of the weekend just before the 13-minute mark of the first. The second-year forward came down the left wing and snapped a shot past Calgary goalie Dustin Butler to put the Cougars up one. Shultz notched his first goal as a Cougar with just 30 seconds left in the first, scoring on the power play to extend Regina's lead to two. The Cougars also had the edge in shots in the fast-skating first, outshooting the Dinos by a 10-6 margin.
Calgary's Nixon took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Cougars four minutes into the second, wiring a slap shot from the slot to beat Ward low to the stick side. The Cougars answered just 66 seconds later, with Sawka and Bru connecting for the first even-strength goal of the weekend. Sawka's no-look behind-the-back pass sent Bru in alone on Butler, and Bru went five-hole to score his fifth goal of the season. Sawka gave Regina a 4-1 lead just after eight minutes had elapsed in the second, outwaiting Butler on another odd-man rush for the Cougars.
Sawka's goal chased Butler from the game, as Calgary head coach Scott Atkinson put Jeff Weber between the pipes for the Dinos. Weber stopped all nine shots sent his way after being put in, as the Cougars outshot the Dinos by a 15-10 margin in the middle stanza.
Shultz and
Caine Pearpoint both scored for the Cougars early in the third period to extend the lead to five. Shortly after Pearpoint's goal, Ward stopped Calgary's Reid Jorgensen on a penalty shot attempt that was awarded after Regina defenceman
Cody Thoring interfered with the Dinos forward from behind. Nixon scored his second of the game at the 7:27 mark of the third to cut the lead to four goals, but that was as close as the Dinos would come.
Butler gave up four goals on 16 shots before being pulled, while Weber allowed two goals and made 20 saves for the Dinos.
Calgary was 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Cougars connected on two of their seven opportunities with the man advantage. The Cougars outshot Calgary 38-31 for the game.
Next weekend, Calgary will host Saskatchewan in a weekend series at the Father David Bauer Arena. The Cougars will host the Canada West-leading Alberta Golden Bears on Friday and Saturday night at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
