In a matchup featuring the top two teams in the CIS, the No. 1-ranked Simon Fraser Clan defeated the Regina Cougars by a score of 80-63 on Saturday night at the West Gym in Burnaby, B.C.
The Clan pulled away from the Cougars early, going on early 9-0 and 9-1 runs to lead by eight points after the first quarter. Simon Fraser extended its lead to 13 points at halftime and coasted to victory in the second half. For the first time this season, the Cougars lost a game while outrebounding their opposition, as Regina held a 35-27 advantage on the boards. Turnovers continue to haunt Regina, as the team turned the ball over 33 times during the contest.
Simon Fraser was led by Robyn Buna, who went 4-for-9 from beyond the arc and collected a game-high 18 points. Katie Miyazaki scored 17 points for the Clan, while Laurelle Weigl chipped in with 16. The Clan are now 12-1 on the season.
Brittany Read had a strong game for the Cougars, scoring a team-leading 14 points and pulling down six rebounds.
Rebecca Schmidt had 12 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter, and
Jessica Lynch scored 10.
Simon Fraser shot 51% from the field, while Regina shot at a 39.2% clip.
Now 9-3 on the season, the Cougars will travel to Manitoba (5-5) next weekend for a pair of road games.
