Coming off of a big home sweep over the Calgary Dinos, the University of Regina's men's hockey team will square off with the No. 1-ranked Alberta Golden Bears on Friday and Saturday at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Led by Dillon Johnstone, who tied a conference record with three power play goals in the second period of Saturday's game and added another on Sunday, the Cougars defeated the Dinos by 3-0 and 6-2 scores. Regina remains in fifth place in the conference, but the Cougars are now four points up on UBC and five points up on Calgary, though both teams have two games in hand.

Third-year goalie Adam Ward recorded both wins for the Cougars last weekend and registered his first CIS shutout after turning aside all 29 of Calgary's shots on Friday.

The Golden Bears have been on an absolute tear since going 4-2-0 in the first six games of the season. Alberta is 13-0-1 in their last 14 games and holds a five-point lead over Saskatchewan for first place in the conference with two games in hand on the Huskies.

With 89 goals in 20 games so far this year, Alberta has no shortage of offensive firepower. Derek Ryan, Ben Kilgour, and Lee Zalasky are all tied for the team lead with ten goals apiece, while Chad Klassen (28), Ryan (23), Brian Woolger (22), Ian McDonald (21), and Kilgour (20) all have at least 20 points for the Golden Bears.

Aaron Sorochan is Alberta's No. 1 goalie, as the fourth-year tender leads the league in both goals-against average (1.61) and save percentage (.938). Sorochan's backup, Real Cyr, has seen action in eight games this season.

For the Cougars, Kyle Ross has the team lead in goals (7), assists (11), and points (18). Rookie defenceman Dylan Chapman is among the conference's highest scoring blueliners, as he's accumulated five goals, ten assists, and 15 points so far this season.

The two teams have already met twice this season, with Alberta squeaking out two 2-1 wins in Edmonton back on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

Both of this weekend's games will go at 7 p.m. at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
