Cougars to play home-and-home against Saskatchewan

10/16/2009 1:14:51 PM

The University of Regina's men's hockey team faces Saskatchewan this weekend in a home-and-home series. The first game goes in Saskatoon on Friday night, with the two teams facing off in Regina on Saturday night. Saturday's game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Neither team has had the start they were looking for this year. The Cougars started the Canada West schedule two weekends ago with a pair of losses to Alberta, then recorded a home split last weekend against UBC to run their record to 1-3-0. Saskatchewan hasn't played since being swept by the Manitoba Bisons on Oct. 2 and 3 in Winnipeg. With the Canada West postseason only featuring the top four teams this season, both teams will be looking to put a pair in the win column this weekend.

After ending up on the wrong side of the score in their first three games of the season, the Cougars turned to first-year goalie Shayne Barrie on Saturday night. Barrie, who entered the season at No. 3 on the team's depth chart, responded with a strong performance in his first CIS start. He made 24 saves in regulation and overtime and stopped all three UBC attempts in the shootout to secure the win for Regina.

Caine Pearpoint leads all Cougar forwards with three points in four games, while second-year defenceman Dylan Chapman – who was named to the CIS All-Rookie Team last season – has a team-leading three assists.

Saturday's game will mark the return of Saskatchewan's Kyle Ross to Regina, as the third-year forward spent his first two years of eligibility with the Cougars before transferring to the U of S to pursue a law degree. Ross, who scored 40 points in his two seasons with Regina, has one assist in two Canada West games with the Huskies this year.

The Cougars won both of the meetings between the two teams during the non-conference schedule, winning 3-2 in overtime on Sept. 12 and 3-1 on Sept. 26. Saskatchewan holds a 69-33-9 all-time advantage over Regina in conference games.

The Cougars will have next weekend off before returning to action on Oct. 30 and 31 at Calgary.
