Box Score Game Summary

Mike Hellyer's shorthanded goal two minutes into the third period stood up as the game-winner as the University of Manitoba took a 3-2 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Canada West men's hockey game at the Communiskate Rink.

With Chad Erb off for a high-sticking penalty and the game tied at two apiece, Hellyer beat Regina goalie Adam Ward for his sixth goal of the season to give the Bisons a lead that they would hang onto for the remainder of the contest.

Kyle Howarth opened the scoring with his first goal of the season just before the nine-minute mark of the first period, then scored again midway through the seconds to give the Bisons a two-goal lead.

After being held off the scoresheet during the entire 2008-09 season and the first ten games of this season, Adam McPherson got the Cougars on the board with a goal at the 16:32 mark of the second. Just 26 seconds later, Regina tied it up after Tanner Shultz scored his second of the season. The score would stay tied until Hellyer's goal early in the third.

Steve Christie made 26 saves to secure the win for the Bisons, who improve their Canada West record to 7-3-1.

Ward was called upon to make 23 saves for the Cougars (4-7-0).

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the Communiskate Rink in Emerald Park. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
