Box Score Game Summary
Rianne Wight's hat trick powered the University of Regina's women's hockey team to a 5-2 win over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
Six of the game's seven goals were scored in the first period alone. Wight opened the scoring just 24 seconds into the game, and fourth-year forward
Rae-Lynn Somogyi extended the lead to two just before the three-minute mark of the first.
Rebecca Niehaus scored for the Dinos at 7:38 of the first, but Wight restored the two-goal lead before the midway point of the period. Tanya Morgan scored on the power play for Calgary at the 14-minute mark, but Wight scored her third goal of the period just over three minutes later to put the Cougars back up by two and chase Dinos goalie Katie Urness.
Paige Wheeler scored the only goal of the final two periods, notching her third of the season at 15:35 of the second period.
Lisa Urban made 19 saves for the Cougars to help secure the team's third win of the season.
“Overall, I thought we had a pretty solid weekend”, Cougars head coach Sarah Howald said. “We struggled around the net yesterday, and it was key for us to break out for five goals today.”
Wight also assisted on Somogyi's goal, giving her a four-point night.
Calgary was 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Cougars were 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
The Dinos (1-9-0) will finish off their pre-Christmas schedule next weekend with two road games at Saskatchewan. Regina, which moves into sole possession of fourth place and sees its record improve to 3-4-3 with the win, will travel for a pair of games at UBC next weekend.
NOTES: Wight's hat trick was the first by a Cougar player since Karissa Swan's three-goal performance against Lethbridge on Nov. 10, 2006 ... the Cougars have recorded at least one point in each of their last four games.
