Cougars drop 5-1 decision to Saskatchewan

The University of Regina's men's hockey team opened the scoring, but gave up five unanswered goals in a 5-1 loss to Saskatchewan on Friday night in Saskatoon.

Carter Smith's fourth goal of the season gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Saskatchewan's Steven Gillen and Jason Wagar both scored before the opening frame ended to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.

Andrew Bailey scored on the power play just before the four-minute mark of the second period to put Saskatchewan (8-6-1) up two, and a goal from Brett Ward just two minutes later chased Regina starter Brant Hilton from the net.

Brennan Bosch finished off the scoring with an insurance marker late in the second.

Jeff Harvey stopped 28 of 29 shots to secure the win for Saskatchewan. Hilton gave up four goals on 23 shots before being pulled, and Adam Ward made 15 saves in relief for the Cougars (4-9-0).

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Rutherford Rink in Saskatoon.
