Box Score Game Summary

Adam Ward's shutout highlighted the University of Regina's 2-0 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night in a Canada West men's hockey game at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Ward stopped all 37 shots that Lethbridge fired at him and Tanner Shultz's first goal of the season six minutes into the second period turned out to be the game winner. Craig Cuthbert put the game away with an empty-net goal with 20 seconds left.

“Tonight was a gritty win for us,” Cougars head coach Blaine Sautner said. “Our guys are committed to blocking shots and getting in the shooting lanes, and that's what got us the win.”

The two teams played a scoreless first period, with Lethbridge outshooting Regina by a 12-5 margin.

Shultz opened the scoring on the power play at 6:03 of the second, one-timing a pass from Bryan Kauk past Pronghorns goalie Scott Bowles. Lethbridge peppered Ward with 13 more shots in the second, while the Cougars had five on Bowles.

Ward, making his first start of the season after missing the first two months of the year due to injury, stopped another 12 shots in the third period to secure the win for the Cougars. Lethbridge ended up outshooting Regina by a 37-15 margin during the contest.

The win improves Regina's record to 3-6-0 on the season and moves the Cougars to within one point of Lethbridge (3-5-1) in the standings.

The two teams will meet again at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre on Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
