Box Score Game Summary
Mark Nelson had a goal and added two assists as the University of Regina's men's hockey team completed the weekend sweep with a 5-2 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in a Canada West game on Saturday night at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
Nelson, a first-year forward, scored Regina's first goal of the game midway through the first period, then assisted on
Dylan Chapman's game-winning goal late in the second and
Ryan Sawka's insurance goal in the third.
Adam Ward made 16 saves to secure the win for the Cougars, while Lethbridge goalie Scott Bowles made 37 saves. Regina's 42-18 advantage in shots was a complete role reversal from Friday's game, in which Lethbridge outshot Regina by a 37-15 margin.
Jason Roberts opened the scoring for Lethbridge on the power play eight minutes into the first period. The score stayed tied at 1-1 following Nelson's goal until the 13-minute mark of the second period, when Roberts struck again for the Pronghorns on the power play to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage. Mark Shefchyk and Andrew Marshall recorded assists on both Roberts goals.
The led was short-lived for Lethbridge, however.
Bryan Kauk's first goal as a Cougar tied up the game less than two minutes after Roberts' second goal, and Chapman scored just past the 17-minute mark to put the Cougars into the lead for good.
Caine Pearpoint and Sawka scored insurance goals in the third, sealing the victory and marking the team's highest offensive output of the season.
Lethbridge falls to 3-6-1 with the loss and will host the Alberta Golden Bears next weekend at the Nicholas Sheran Arena.
The win improves Regina's record to 4-6-0 on the season and moves the Cougars up from seventh to fifth in the Canada West standings. The Cougars will host Manitoba next weekend at the Communiskate Rink in Emerald Park, Sask.
