The Simon Fraser Clan won the 2009 Canada West women's basketball championship on Saturday night after defeating the Regina Cougars by a 68-57 score at the West Gym in Burnaby, B.C.
Chelsea Cassano led off the game with her first career three-pointer during the Cougars' first possession, but the No. 1-ranked Clan took the lead back in a hurry with an 18-2 run that gave them a 13-point lead. Simon Fraser led by 12 after the second quarter, and the Cougars weren't able to draw within any closer than nine points in the second half.
Matteke Hutzler and Laurelle Weigl led the Clan with 15 points apiece, while Robyn Buna and Courtney Gerwing both chipped in with 12.
Cassano had 16 points and 12 rebounds to record a double-double for the Cougars, and
Rebecca Schmidt chipped in with ten points.
Turnovers were the story of the game, as Regina turned the ball over 29 times compared to Simon Fraser's eight.
Both teams will now prepare for the 2009 CIS Championship, which will be hosted by the University of Regina at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport next weekend.
