The University of Regina's women's basketball team scored an 85-34 victory on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars pulled away with 13 consecutive points in the first quarter and never looked back, as they held a 24-point lead at the half and outscored the Bobcats by a 26-4 margin in the fourth.
Gabrielle Gheyssen was 8-for-11 from the field and ended up with a game-high 18 points for the Cougars.
Chelsea Cassano had 11 points for Regina, while
Maja Kralovcova was 5-for-6 from the field and had ten points.
Jessica Lynch tied for the game high with 11 rebounds and added seven points.
Nicisha Johnson and Jayla Bousquet both had eight points to lead the Bobcats (1-20). Johnson also pulled down a team-leading 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive side of the glass.
The Cougars dominated the boards throughout the game, ending up outrebounding the Bobcats by a 57-34 margin. Regina shot 50.7% from the field compared to Brandon's 19.7%.
The win improves the Cougars' record to 17-4.
The teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS with a 6:15 tip-off time. The Cougars will honour graduating players Cassano,
Megan Cherkas,
Meryl Jordan,
Jacquie Kenyon, Kralovcova,
Mallory Loire, and Lynch at halftime and following the contest.
Already assured of hosting the best-of-three Great Plains Division final, the Cougars will rest next weekend before hosting the winner of the Winnipeg/Manitoba series.
