Box Score Game Summary

The University of Regina's women's hockey team moved into fourth place in Canada West after defeating the Saskatchewan Huskies by a 3-2 score on Sunday afternoon at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

With the win, the Cougars pull into a playoff position for the first time this season. Regina and UBC are tied for fourth place with 15 points each, but the Cougars hold the tiebreaker as they have a 3-1 record against the Thunderbirds this season.

Saskatchewan opened up the scoring with two goals in the first period. Danny Stone's 13th goal of the season gave the Huskies a one-goal lead in the early stages of the first, and Nicole Peppler put Saskatchewan up 2-0 with a goal late in the period.

The Cougars got on the board early in the second period. Stefany Rankin's backhander from the slot found its way through the legs of Saskatchewan goalie Chauntal Armet to cut the lead to one. The score stayed that way until early in the third, when Rianne Wight took advantage of a turnover during a Saskatchewan power play and tied the game with a beautiful move to the backhand on a breakaway.

It looked like the two teams might be headed to overtime, but Kelcie McCutcheon had other ideas. With Saskatchewan's Jaclyn Tate serving a two-minute body checking penalty, McCutcheon pounced on a rebound with Armet out of position, scoring a goal that would stand up as the game-winner.

Lisa Urban made 18 saves for the Cougars to secure the win. Armet allowed three goals on 22 shots for the Huskies, who will end their regular season next weekend with a pair of games at Manitoba.

With their playoff destiny in their own hands, the Cougars will host Alberta next weekend at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre. Games will go on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
