The University of Regina's men's hockey team's season ended on Sunday night after the Cougars were defeated 7-1 by the No. 2-ranked Alberta Golden Bears in the third and deciding game of the Canada West semifinal series.
Alberta came out flying, as Chad Klassen scored just 58 seconds into the contest to get the Golden Bears on the board. Alberta scored four more times in the first period alone, including Dale Mahovsky's 5-0 goal that chased Regina goalie
Adam Ward with three minutes left in the opening frame.
Aaron Sorochan made 22 saves to secure the win for Alberta. His only blemish came in the latter stages of the second period, when
Ryan Bender's power play shot eluded him for Regina's lone goal of the contest.
Brant Hilton was strong in relief for the Cougars, stopping 28 of Alberta's 30 shots that he faced. The Golden Bears outshot Regina by a 42-23 margin during the contest.
The Cougars were 1-for-6 on the power play, while Alberta was 0-for-7 with the man advantage.
Alberta will host Saskatchewan next weekend in the best-of-three Canada West final.
