The University of Regina's women's basketball team came up short in its bid to become the first team to win the CIS championship on its home court, as the Cougars lost 68-62 to the Simon Fraser Clan on Sunday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars led for most of the first three quarters, but the No. 1-ranked Clan showed why they entered the weekend as the tournament's top seed.

Led by Robyn Buna, the Clan went on a 15-2 run that spanned the end of the third quarter and the first three minutes of the fourth. Buna scored ten of those points for Simon Fraser, ending up with a game-high 20 points and pulling down eight rebounds.

Regina cut the lead to just four points two times in the final two minutes, but weren't able to draw any closer. Simon Fraser held off the Cougars down the stretch to win their fourth national championship, all of which have come in the last eight seasons.

Lisa Tindle and Matteke Hutzler both scored 11 points for the Clan, while Kelsey Horsting chipped in with ten off the bench.

The Cougars had a team-high 16 points from fifth-year post Chelsea Cassano, ten of which came in the opening quarter. Jessica Lynch had ten points and nine rebounds, and both Cassano and Lynch were named to the championship all-star team following the game.

Sunday's game was the final action in a Cougar uniform for six fifth-year players, as Cassano, Lynch, Megan Cherkas, Meryl Jordan, Jacquie Kenyon, and Maja Kralovcova all finished off their CIS careers.

The CIS silver medal is the second in as many years for the Cougars and the U of R's third in the past six seasons.

NOTES: An announced crowd of 2440 shoehorned its way into the CKHS … the U of R is now 1-4 in national championship games, losing to Laurentian (1991), UBC (2004 and 2008), and Simon Fraser (2009) and defeating Alberta (2001).
