Box Score Game Summary

Tanner Shultz's shorthanded goal midway through the second period stood up as the winner as the University of Regina's men's hockey team edged the Saskatchewan Huskies by a 3-2 score on Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Brant Hilton made 32 saves to secure the win for the Cougars, who improve their Canada West record to 6-10-1 with the victory. Shultz's goal was one of two shorthanded markers for the Cougars, as Cody Thoring's opening goal of the contest came with Mark Nelson in the box serving a cross-checking penalty.

"We got a pretty consistent effort from all 20 guys tonight, and we had talked beforehand about needing all of our players to show up," Cougars head coach Blaine Sautner said. "We battled through adversity with all the penalty kills, and to get two shorties tonight was a huge momentum boost for us."

The Cougars were 1-for-4 on the power play, while Saskatchewan was held to one power play goal on ten man advantages.

The Cougars opened the scoring midway through the first period, as Thoring finished off a shorthanded 3-on-1 with helpers from Caine Pearpoint and Shultz. Craig Cuthbert scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season less than three minutes later, with Dillon Johnstone and Carter Smith assisting on the power play marker. Regina had a 12-11 shot advantage over Saskatchewan in the opening frame.

Chad Greenan got the Huskies on the board just past the four-minute mark of the second, scoring on a one-timer from the high slot with his team on a power play to cut the lead to one. Shultz restored the lead midway through the period on an individual effort, taking a loose puck down the right wing and snapping a shot over Saskatchewan goalie David Reekie's glove to score the team's second shorthanded goal of the contest. The Huskies enjoyed the run of play in the second, outshooting the Cougars by a 13-6 margin.

Kyle Bortis drew Saskatchewan to within one goal just before the six-minute mark of the third, but Hilton was able to slam the door shut the rest of the way. The Cougars had a key penalty kill late in the contest after Smith was whistled for interference with just over four minutes left in the contest.

The loss drops Saskatchewan's record to 9-7-1 on the season.

The two teams will play again on Sunday night at Rutherford Rink in Saskatoon.
