Huskies take out Cougars in shootout

The Saskatchewan Huskies took a 4-3 shootout victory over the Regina Cougars on Sunday night in a Canada West women's hockey game at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Sara White scored the shootout winner for Saskatchewan, beating Regina goalie Lisa Urban in the fifth round to secure the win. Breanne George and Chelsea Purcell also scored for the Huskies in the shootout, while Rianne Wight and Jayme-Lee Green were both successful for the Cougars.

Julie Paetsch opened the scoring for Saskatchewan with a power play goal eight minutes into the first period. Wight tied up the game for Regina early in the second, but George restored the one-goal Saskatchewan lead with her 20th of the season less than five minutes later.

Paige Wheeler tied the game at two apiece with a goal midway through the second, and Wight's second goal of the contest gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead early in the third.

George scored again for Saskatchewan less than two minutes after Wight's goal, tying up the game with the final goal of regulation. Paetsch assisted on both of George's goals, giving the former Cougar a three-point night.

The Huskies were 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Cougars were 0-for-4. Saskatchewan's Vanessa Frederick made 29 saves in regulation and overtime and stopped three shootout attempts, while Regina's Lisa Urban made 31 saves in the loss.

Saskatchewan (12-5-3) will host UBC next weekend in Saskatoon.

The Cougars, who move to 5-7-6 on the season with the shootout loss, will travel to Winnipeg next weekend for a pair of games against Manitoba.
