Cougar comeback falls just short as UBC’s Campos scores overtime winner

Brandon Campos scored on the power play 74 seconds into overtime to give the UBC Thunderbirds a 5-4 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night in a Canada West game at the Father Bauer Arena in Vancouver.

The Thunderbirds opened the game with four unanswered goals, scoring three in the first period and chasing Regina starter Adam Ward with another goal just 14 seconds into the second.

Brant Hilton came in for Ward and the Cougars finally woke up, as new addition Jared Jagow scored is second goal in as many games to get the Cougars on the board. Jagow's marker was followed by goals from Russ Nielsen and Caine Pearpoint to make the score 4-3 after two, and Dillon Johnstone tied the game with his second goal of the season just past the 13-minute mark of the third.

Hilton ended up with 17 saves for the Cougars, while UBC goalie Jordan White was peppered with 37 shots and stopped 33 of them.

The overtime loss was Regina's first of the season as the Cougars move to 5-10-1 on the season. UBC improves to 6-11-1 with the win.

The Cougars will return to action next weekend with a home-and-home against Saskatchewan (9-6-1). The teams will meet in Regina on Saturday night and again in Saskatoon on Sunday.
