Huskies blast Cougars to earn weekend split

10/16/2010 11:19:01 PM

Box Score Game Summary

The Saskatchewan Huskies scored early and often on Saturday night, taking down the Regina Cougars by a 9-1 score in a Canada West men's hockey game at The Co-Operators Centre.

Saskatchewan's Andrew Bailey opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal four minutes into the first period, but Cougar first-year forward Tyler Penny crashed the net to score his first of the season and tie the game at one just 83 seconds after that.

Unfortunately for the hometown Cougars, that would be the only offence they'd generate during the contest.

Jason Wagar and Steven DaSilva scored within a minute and a half before the midway point of the first period, and Saskatchewan took a 5-1 lead into the first intermission thanks to power play goals from Kyle Bortis and Brennan Bosch.

Regina starter #A.J. Whiffen was pulled after the first period in favour of second-year goalie Shayne Barrie#, but the switch wasn't able to provide a spark for the Cougars. Bosch, Bailey, and Steven Gillen each scored in the second as the Huskies took an 8-1 lead into the third, and Wagar's second of the night finished off the scoring at the 6:46 mark of the third period.

David Reekie stopped 39 of 40 shots for Saskatchewan, helping the Huskies improve to 2-2-0 on the season. Saskatchewan was an impressive 4-for-10 on the power play and held the Cougars scoreless on their eight opportunities with the man advantage.

The Huskies will host Manitoba twice next weekend in Saskatoon, while the Cougars (3-3-0) will have a week off before hosting UBC on Oct. 29 and 30 at The Co-Operators Centre.
