Box Score Game Summary
The University of Regina's men's hockey team registered its fourth consecutive weekend split after defeating the UBC Thunderbirds by a 6-2 score on Saturday night in a Canada West game at The Co-Operators Centre.
The Cougars (4-4-0) move into sole possession of third place in the Canada West standings with the victory, while UBC falls to 2-3-1 on the season.
“Last night we weren't very good defensively, but the offence carried into tonight,” Cougars head coach
Blaine Sautner said. “We started off with a couple early power plays and that was good to get the ball rolling. The guys stuck to the game plan a lot better tonight and it paid off for us.”
Regina scored three times in the second half of the first period, starting with
Brett Leffler's power play marker at 13:23.
Matt Strueby added another goal with the man advantage just over a minute later, and
Carter Selinger put the Cougars up three with an even strength goal with just seven seconds remaining in the opening frame.
Lucas Isley scored just over two minutes into the second period, and
Cody Esposito's first goal as a Cougar extended the lead to five.
UBC finally got on the board on the power play shortly after Esposito's marker, as Tyler Ruel scored on the power play for the Thunderbirds, but Isley's second of the night restored the five-goal lead with three minutes left in the second.
The Thunderbirds' James Isaacs scored the lone goal of the third, but that was all the offence UBC could muster against a Regina team that protected its lead well in the final period.
Making his third start of the season, #A.J. Whiffen# made 23 saves in the victory for the Cougars. Jordan White started in net for UBC, but was pulled after the first period in favour of Joe Rodwell.
Isley added an assist for a three-point night for the Cougars and now ranks second on the team with six points in eight games.
Terrance DeLaronde and
Cody Thoring both had a pair of assists in the win.
The Cougars will hit the road next week for a pair of games at Manitoba (3-2-1), while UBC will return home to face Lethbridge (1-3-2) in Vancouver.
